Recalling those glorious years and carrying forward the red gene. On the afternoon of June 11, the Shenyang Passenger Transport Section held a speech and report meeting to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the 12th Train’s victory over the flood and to carry forward the spirit of the 12th Train. Sixty-five years ago, Zhang Minyuan, the first heroic train conductor, attended and delivered a report. Mu Zhenhua, the current squad leader of the Lei Feng Squad, also attended and gave a brief report. The meeting took the form of speeches and reports, recounting the railway passenger transport workers’ dedication to the people and the inheritance of their red heritage over the past 65 years.

Zhang Minyuan, the first train conductor of the No. 12 “March 8th Dedicated Crew,” delivered a speech. With deep emotion, Zhang Minyuan recounted how, 65 years ago, she and her colleagues faced raging floods without the slightest hesitation, rushing to rescue both civilians and supplies. In July 1959, the No. 12 train, traveling from Shenyang to Beijing, encountered a massive flood while passing through the Suizhong section. With her quick thinking, courage, and scientific leadership, she led the crew in a continuous three-day and three-night battle, ultimately bringing the No. 12 train safely back to Shenyang—a remarkable feat in the history of China’s railways that not only ensured the safety of the train itself but also protected its passengers.

Sixteen contestants took part in a speech competition. With passionate and inspiring words, they recounted the selfless dedication of generations of staff from the “12th Hero Train” as they confronted crises such as flood disasters and pandemic-related delays. They also shared touching stories about the heartfelt connections forged between themselves and the passengers. The red gene has been passed down from generation to generation, and the “12th Hero Train” continues to carry forward its legacy. Though the train’s chief conductors have changed one after another and the crew has been renewed time and again, their commitment remains unwavering: “We keep the passengers at heart—everything we do is for the passengers.”
