At the special democratic life meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on studying and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered a profound exposition on political sensitivity, emphasizing the crucial requirement that “we must always maintain a high degree of political sensitivity, keeping in mind potential dangers even in times of peace and preparing for the worst.” On this new journey ahead, faced with a complex and intricate international and domestic situation, we must consistently uphold a high degree of political sensitivity, strive to grasp the strategic overall picture, take the initiative in strategy, and enhance the foresight and proactiveness of all our work. We must continuously improve our ability to detect subtle signs and perceive minute details, and constantly strengthen our capacity to accurately identify the trends of the times, the interplay between danger and opportunity, and the balance between advantages and disadvantages.
Master Marxism as a “telescope and microscope.” The depth of your grasp of Marxist theory determines the degree of your political sensitivity, the breadth of your intellectual horizons, and the height of your ideological realm. Comrade Mao Zedong pointed out: “Our vision is insufficient; we should rely on telescopes and microscopes. The Marxist method is precisely the political and military telescope and microscope.” Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is contemporary Chinese Marxism and 21st-century Marxism, opening up a new realm of the sinicization and modernization of Marxism. To truly master Marxism as our fundamental skill, we must study deeply and thoroughly Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era—their scientific system, core essence, and practical requirements—grasp the worldview and methodology underlying this important thought, uphold and effectively apply the standpoints, viewpoints, and methods running through it, ensure political firmness through theoretical clarity, and truly develop a pair of “political keen eyes.”
We must unswervingly uphold the Party’s political development as the overarching guiding principle, always and everywhere approaching issues, making decisions, and carrying out tasks from a political perspective. Political advancement is a salient feature that distinguishes Marxist political parties from other political parties. Clearly upholding politics is a fundamental requirement for our Party as a Marxist political party. Maintaining a high degree of political sensitivity at all times requires us to analyze issues from a political standpoint, thereby gaining a clear understanding of their underlying essence, and to address problems politically, thus getting to the root of the matter. Faced with a complex and ever-changing domestic and international situation, and confronted with arduous and heavy tasks of reform, development, and stability, the vast number of Party members and cadres must be adept at analyzing developments, changes, and trends from a political perspective, seeing through appearances to grasp the essential nature of things. We must unswervingly uphold the Party’s political development as the overarching guiding principle, raise our political awareness, deeply comprehend the decisive significance of the “Two Establishments,” enhance our “Four Consciousnesses,” firmly uphold our “Four Confidences,” and ensure we “Safeguard the Two Upholds.” When formulating major strategies, drafting major policies, and deploying major tasks, we must accurately identify the political direction and rigorously implement political requirements. We must consciously align ourselves with the Party’s basic theory, basic line, and basic strategy, as well as with the decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee, promptly correcting any deviations. We must resolutely respond to what the Party Central Committee advocates, faithfully implement what it decides, and firmly reject what it prohibits. On major issues concerning the future and destiny of socialism with Chinese characteristics—issues of right and wrong—we must maintain a firm stance and clearly display our position without the slightest ambiguity. Only in this way can we ensure that all undertakings consistently advance along the correct political course.
We must adhere to bottom-line thinking and enhance our sense of potential risks, effectively preventing and resolving all kinds of risks and challenges on our path forward. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “When addressing and resolving contradictions and problems, we must pay close attention to preventing and defusing political risks. We need sharp eyes, early detection, and swift action—promptly eliminating various political hidden dangers, attaching great importance to and promptly blocking channels through which risks from different fields might spill over, and preventing non-political risks from turning into political risks.” Maintaining a high degree of political sensitivity at all times requires a strong sense of potential risks and risk awareness, especially emphasizing the prevention and resolution of political risks. On this new journey ahead, to hone our ability to perceive subtle signs and detect even the slightest details, we must uphold bottom-line thinking and strengthen our sense of potential risks. We must remain highly vigilant toward sensitive factors and emerging trends that could easily trigger political issues—particularly major emergencies—and stay alert to various erroneous ideological trends, ambiguous perceptions, and negative phenomena in the ideological sphere, ensuring that our eyes are sharp, we spot issues early, and we act swiftly. We must earnestly enhance our capacity to grasp the direction, understand the overall situation, and see the bigger picture; to distinguish between right and wrong in politics, maintain political composure, steer the political landscape, and guard against political risks. We should consciously think and act within the broader context of the Party and the state’s work.
