In this new era and on this new journey, universities must deeply study and implement Xi Jinping’s Thought on Culture. They should make concerted efforts to uphold cultural self-reliance, strengthen cultural confidence, and achieve cultural self-reliance and strength. By doing so, they can nurture contemporary college students into the new generation of young people who are better equipped to shoulder the new cultural mission and strive to become pillars of strength capable of fulfilling the great task of building a strong country and realizing national rejuvenation.
Uphold cultural self-reliance. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “For any culture to stand firm and go far, it must possess leadership, cohesion, formative power, and radiating influence—and to do so, it must have its own sense of agency.” Upholding cultural self-reliance requires continuously strengthening our cultural agency. Since its founding, the Communist Party of China has consistently integrated the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with China’s outstanding traditional culture. Under its leadership, the Chinese people have creatively transformed and innovatively developed China’s outstanding traditional culture, inherited revolutionary culture, fostered advanced socialist culture, and drawn on and absorbed all the finest achievements of human civilization, thereby establishing our cultural agency. Since the 18th National Congress of the Party, the Communists led by Comrade Xi Jinping have created Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which stands as the most powerful embodiment of this cultural agency. The contemporary youth’s steadfast commitment to cultural agency reflects their spiritual outlook and is crucial to their confidence and strength in shouldering new cultural missions. On the new journey toward building a strong country and achieving national rejuvenation, cultivating a new generation of young people who can better shoulder these new cultural missions means guiding young students to persistently use Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era to forge their hearts and souls. We must focus on truly studying, understanding, believing in, and applying this thought deeply, and on further internalizing and transforming it. We should help young students profoundly recognize the historical consciousness embodied in Xi Jinping’s cultural thought—the commitment to cultural self-reliance—fully appreciate their historical mission and contemporary responsibilities in inheriting and developing culture, continuously strengthen their cultural agency, achieve spiritual independence and self-reliance, and contribute their youthful wisdom and energy to promoting cultural prosperity, building a culturally strong nation, and constructing a modern Chinese civilization.

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “Cultural confidence is a more fundamental, broader, and deeper form of confidence; it is a more essential, profound, and enduring source of strength.” Firmly upholding cultural confidence is a major issue that concerns the rise and fall of our nation’s fortunes, the security of our culture, and the independence of our national spirit. Ultimately, firmly upholding confidence in the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, in its guiding theories, and in its institutional framework all boil down to firmly upholding cultural confidence. Since the advent of the new era, General Secretary Xi Jinping, on the basis of profoundly summarizing the historical experience of the sinicization and modernization of Marxism and gaining a deep understanding of the laws governing the development of Chinese civilization, has put forward the significant proposition of the “Second Combination,” signaling that our Party’s historical confidence and cultural confidence have reached a new height—and that our Party’s consciousness in promoting cultural innovation while inheriting China’s outstanding traditional culture has also reached a new height. Both history and reality demonstrate that adhering to the integration of the basic principles of Marxism with China’s outstanding traditional culture helps to unleash the driving force behind cultural development, strengthen the direction of cultural progress, and promote the prosperity and flourishing of culture. In today’s era, young students find themselves in a big-data era characterized by rapidly changing information and face an increasingly diverse cultural environment. This calls for universities to place even greater emphasis on playing their own key role as educational institutions and guiding students to firmly uphold cultural confidence. On the new journey toward building a strong country and achieving national rejuvenation, universities must continuously improve their cultural curriculum systems, enhance teachers’ teaching quality, innovate teaching content, and inspire students’ enthusiasm for learning. In particular, ideological and political courses at universities must fully play their crucial role in fostering moral integrity and cultivating well-rounded individuals; they must effectively communicate the latest achievements of the Party’s theoretical innovations, tell the stories of the Party’s history, the history of New China, the history of reform and opening-up, the history of socialist development, and the history of the Chinese nation’s development—deeply reflecting the historical depth and contemporary significance of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics. By doing so, these courses can forge souls and nurture character, enlighten minds and enhance wisdom, continuously strengthening college students’ cultural confidence and enabling them to better shoulder their new cultural mission.

On this new journey toward building a strong country and achieving national rejuvenation, while continuously strengthening the material foundations of modernization and solidifying the material conditions for people’s happy lives, we must also vigorously promote cultural prosperity, carry forward the Chinese civilization, foster the comprehensive enrichment of material things and the all-round development of individuals, and constantly invigorate the momentum of cultural self-reliance. By consolidating our roots and nurturing our essence, upholding orthodoxy while promoting innovation, we can bring forth the radiant brilliance of Chinese culture in the contemporary era. Through reform and innovation, we can unleash vitality and meet the spiritual and cultural needs of the people, thereby continuously enhancing the spiritual strength needed to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Looking ahead, universities must earnestly fulfill their fundamental mission of fostering virtue and cultivating talent, uphold the fundamental institutional principle of Marxism’s guiding role in the ideological sphere, and take the core socialist values as our guiding compass. We must integrate Xi Jinping’s thought on culture throughout the entire process and all aspects of youth education, guiding young students to ground themselves in the great historical and contemporary practices of the Chinese nation, and infusing youthful vigor into the advancement of human civilization through the flourishing and revitalization of Chinese culture in the new era. University teachers must vigorously promote the spirit of educators, adhering to the approach of educating people through culture and nurturing them with culture. They should focus on cultural immersion, inspiration, and cultivation, thereby nurturing a new generation of young people who are capable of shouldering the great responsibility of national rejuvenation. All teachers should consciously integrate the Marxist worldview, outlook on life, and values into their teaching, using knowledge dissemination, capability development, and cultural inheritance to educate and guide young students to learn and draw upon all outstanding achievements of human civilization more proactively and energetically, continuously enhancing their ability to achieve cultural self-reliance in their respective fields, and making positive contributions to advancing the construction of a culturally strong socialist country.
