Persistently uphold a proper academic atmosphere.

Theoretical maturity is the foundation for political maturity, and political steadfastness stems from theoretical clarity.” For Party members and cadres, fostering a fine academic ethos and strengthening theoretical education are both fundamental requirements for cultivating Party spirit and an inescapable political responsibility.

The issue of academic style is fundamentally a question of one’s attitude toward Marxism—a major political issue that bears on the rise and fall of the Party and the success or failure of our cause. To deepen, ground more firmly, and truly internalize the study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we must also focus on the “first and most important issue”—academic style itself. We must genuinely rectify our academic style in the process of study and implementation, and use this rectification of academic style to further enhance our study and implementation efforts.
The academic style refers to the attitude and atmosphere with which we approach and handle the relationships among theory and practice, learning and application, and words and deeds. The academic style is closely linked to the work style, and it reflects the Party’s ethos. Attaching great importance to the building of an academic style is a distinctive feature and glorious tradition of our Party and our military. Comrade Mao Zedong once explicitly pointed out: “The issue of academic style is a question of thinking methods for leading bodies, all cadres, and all Party members—it is a question of our attitude toward Marxism-Leninism, and it is a question of the working attitude of all Party comrades. Since this is the case, the issue of academic style is an extremely important one, indeed the most important one.” By closely linking the issue of academic style with thinking methods, the application of theory, and working attitudes, and by elevating it to the status of “the most important issue,” Comrade Mao Zedong’s insight remains profoundly relevant and meaningful even today.
The academic style of linking theory with practice embodies our attitude toward Marxism and reflects the Party’s level of theoretical consciousness and spiritual outlook. The Communist Party of China has inscribed Marxism on its banner and regards linking theory with practice as one of the Party’s three fine traditions. The prerequisite for linking theory with practice is to thoroughly understand and master the theory—“persist in studying, studying, and studying again; persist in putting theory into practice, practicing, and practicing again.” The essence of linking theory with practice lies in the “integration” of theory and reality: “To uphold and develop Marxism, we must integrate it with China’s specific realities and with China’s outstanding traditional culture.” The ultimate goal of linking theory with practice is to guide practical actions and advance our work—“learning is not about memorizing dogmas or quotations; rather, it is about using what we’ve learned to solve real-world problems.”
Since the 18th National Congress of the Party, the Party Central Committee and President Xi have taken the lead in restoring and promoting the fine academic traditions of Marxism, adhering to the principle of building the Party through thought and strengthening the Party through theory. They have insisted on linking theory with practice, established and perfected long-term mechanisms for forging souls through study, enhancing wisdom through study, rectifying conduct through study, and boosting action through study. These efforts are aimed at addressing issues such as superficial learning, lack of ideological unity, and inadequate alignment of actions, thereby continuously deepening and solidifying the Party’s armed adherence to its innovative theories. It is particularly important to recognize that, as the pace of development of the Party’s innovative theories in the new era continues to accelerate and the modernization of national defense and the armed forces speeds up, there is an even greater need to continuously improve our academic style—ensuring that we keep pace in our learning, stay aligned in our understanding, and remain synchronized in our actions.
The value of theory lies in guiding practice, and the purpose of learning is entirely to put what we learn into action. To carry forward the fine scholarly tradition of Marxism, we must adhere to the principles of constant learning and constant renewal, constantly reflecting on and advancing our understanding; we must integrate learning into our daily routines and make it a regular part of our work. We should encourage officers and soldiers to read original works more often, study the original texts diligently, and deeply comprehend their underlying principles. We must not only master the main content comprehensively and systematically but also grasp the scientific framework as a whole. We must firmly acquire the worldview and methodology embodied in the “Six Musts” and the military outlook and methodology outlined in the “Five Musts.” We must uphold the integration of learning, thinking, and application, and ensure that knowledge, belief, and action are unified. While emphasizing both learning and practice, we must energize our mental state and rally our collective strength. We must genuinely transform the outcomes of our studies into a heightened sense of commitment to our ideals and an unwavering dedication to strengthening Party discipline, and turn these insights into powerful forces that guide our practice and drive our work forward, thus continuously opening up new horizons for the cause of building a strong military.
