Marxism is the theoretical foundation upon which the “red gene” was born. The soul of the red gene lies in the faith in Marxism, the pursuit of communism, and the steadfast commitment to serving the people wholeheartedly. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out, “The ‘red’ color is the brightest hue that defines the Communist Party of China and the People’s Republic of China,” and “We must remember our glorious history and carry forward the red gene.” As the ideological cornerstone and spiritual source of communists, the red gene emerged alongside the spread of Marxism in China. It took shape during the period of the New Democratic Revolution, developed during the socialist revolution and construction period, flourished in the new historical era of reform and opening up, and reached new heights in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The red gene embodies the Party’s nature and purpose, harbors powerful spiritual strength, and represents a precious spiritual treasure of the Chinese nation. The formation of the red gene rests on the lofty faith in Marxism and the firm communist ideals as its essential foundation and value orientation; the Party’s theoretical innovations, rooted in the scientific theories of Marxism, provide an important theoretical basis for the inheritance and development of the red gene.

Unearth the rich connotations. The “red gene” is a collective embodiment of the ideals, beliefs, glorious traditions, revolutionary spirit, fine work styles, and unity principles that the Communist Party of China has forged through long-term revolutionary practice guided by Marxism and further developed during the periods of construction and reform. Every major historical event, every revolutionary holy site, every revolutionary spirit, every revolutionary hero and martyr, and every revolutionary cultural relic represents the glorious years our Party has traversed and the heroic songs it has composed. They vividly showcase our Party’s dreams and aspirations, its sacrifices and dedication, its deep sentiments and sense of responsibility, and have crystallized into our Party’s invaluable spiritual wealth. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized: “We must never lose our glorious traditions—losing them means losing our soul; we must never let the red gene change—changing it means compromising its essence.” In this new era and on this new journey, we must, in light of new historical conditions and practical requirements, continuously enrich and develop the connotations and forms of expression of red culture. We must delve deeply into the rich ideological and spiritual resources embedded in the red gene, and continue to promote its innovative development. We should thoroughly implement the Red Gene Inheritance Project, further strengthen research on Party history, accurately grasp the main themes and threads of the Party’s historical development, draw upon historical experiences, and better articulate the connotations and extensions of the red gene, the revolutionary spirit, and fine work styles, so that the red gene may permeate our very blood and deeply resonate with our hearts.
Innovate approaches to inheriting our heritage. First, make good use of red resources. These red resources bear witness to the Party’s arduous yet glorious journey of struggle; they represent our most precious spiritual wealth—irreplaceable and non-renewable treasures that must be carefully protected and effectively utilized. Revolutionary museums, memorial halls, Party history museums, and martyrs’ cemeteries are all repositories of the Party and the nation’s red genes. We must treat these red resources as vivid teaching materials for strengthening our ideals and convictions and enhancing our Party spirit, guiding the whole society to understand history, love the Party, and cherish our country. We must remain true to our original aspirations, courageously shoulder our missions, and unswervingly strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Second, tell the red stories well. The red gene is engraved in the red imprints and has settled deep within the red stories. Focusing on major events and pivotal moments from the periods of revolution, construction, and reform, we should identify and designate a number of important landmark sites, and tell well the stories of the Party, the revolution, the base areas, and the heroes and martyrs. We must intensify education on revolutionary traditions, patriotism, and moral and ethical cultivation among young people, ensuring that the red gene is passed down faithfully. Third, leverage technological means. Fully harness big data to carry out in-depth special surveys of red resources, strengthen the protection of red sites and revolutionary relics, and strike a balance between emergency preservation and preventive conservation, protection of the relics themselves and their surrounding environments, and single-site protection versus cluster protection. Upholding the unity of political integrity, ideological depth, and artistic excellence, we must maintain the right orientation, focus on key themes, let historical facts speak for themselves, and create high-quality, exemplary exhibitions that enhance expressiveness, dissemination power, and influence, vividly promoting red culture. We should advance the digitalization of red resources, explore contemporary methods of dissemination, and enable more people to receive education and gain inspiration.
