If I’m going to do it, I’d better do it right!” Not long ago, during the broadcast of “Role Models 9,” these simple yet profound words from Fan Zhenxi, Party Secretary of Zhoutaizi Village in Luanping County, Chengde City, Hebei Province, left a deep impression on viewers.
Daring to go all in is both the courage of taking responsibility and the approach to getting things done. Take Fan Zhenxi as an example: How can we solve the village’s development challenges? To rectify the mining sites, he started by tackling problems within his own family first. When the iron ore processing plant lacked funds, he collected over 230 red thumbprints from villagers, asking them to lend money—promising that any profits would belong to the village collective, while any losses would be borne by the village officials themselves...
Only by boldly taking action can we overcome difficulties and surmount challenges; with a truly public-minded heart, we will naturally earn trust. Fan Zhenxi and the village’s two committees took the lead in getting things done, and Party members and cadres led villagers to forge ahead together, transforming Zhoutaizi Village from a poor village burdened with external debt into a prosperous village with an average annual per capita income exceeding 30,000 yuan.
The transformation of Zhoutaizi Village underscores a profound truth: boldly taking action is the most straightforward methodology.
General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized: “For anything that benefits the Party and the people, we must not shy away from difficulties, nor evade our responsibilities. We must act boldly and decisively.” Once we’ve identified a clear course of action, we must seize the opportunity and get down to work with vigor. By demonstrating excellent conduct and setting a positive example, we can firmly unite the masses around us and work together. With such unity and determination, there will be no obstacle we cannot overcome, and no task we cannot accomplish.
To start a business and accomplish great things, one can never rely solely on stability and smooth sailing. Only by bravely rising to meet challenges, proactively seizing opportunities, and actively resolving conflicts can we continuously push our endeavors forward.
When the Party assigns cadres to a particular post, it does so precisely to address and resolve problems. If a cadre refuses to wash the dishes for fear of breaking them, or shies away from taking on responsibilities for fear of making mistakes, such a cadre may seem at first glance to lack a sense of responsibility—but at its root, this reflects a weak and impure Party spirit. Historically speaking, those exemplary Party members and cadres who have moved us deeply and left an enduring impression—such as Jiao Yulu, Gu Wenchang, and Yang Shanzhou—shared one crucial trait: they steadfastly upheld Party principles, dared to shoulder responsibilities, were willing to sacrifice themselves, and never backed down in their dedication to the cause of the Party and the people.
When the people are at the heart of everything we do, the people will naturally gravitate toward us. It is precisely because of generations of Communist Party members like these that our Party has been able to rally an awe-inspiring, earth-shattering, and transformative force—a force that has made absolute poverty a thing of the past, brought electricity, roads, fiber-optic networks, and internet access to even the most remote rural areas, and ensured that the nation’s development and people’s lives improve year after year, thus erecting an enduring monument in the hearts of the masses.
Faced with the “new challenges” of development that keep pace with the times and the “major undertaking” of reform, we must continuously push forward this unprecedented cause, constantly writing new chapters in practice and new epics for our era. To do so, Party members and cadres must summon up their vigor and fighting spirit, dare to take responsibility, and excel in action. Reform is inherently risky, but failing to reform poses the greatest risk of all; development will inevitably encounter problems, yet failing to develop represents the greatest problem of all. Only by relying on tenacious struggle—by tackling tough challenges and getting things done—can we continually open up new horizons for reform and development.
Taking action inevitably involves risks; the more boldly one acts, the greater the likelihood of unintentional mistakes or errors made in the course of exploration. To encourage officials to take responsibility and get things done, we must strengthen our care and protection for those who step up and shoulder responsibilities. We need both robust institutional mechanisms to provide “preemptive support” and a tolerance-for-error, no-blame approach for “post-event remedies.” We must not only enforce discipline precisely and clearly define behavioral boundaries but also establish a personnel-selection and appointment orientation that values practical work and tangible achievements. Only then can we create a more relaxed “space for trial and error,” enabling officials to act with greater confidence and fully unleash their potential.
Taking responsibility and tackling challenges is both the duty and the true value of cadres. On the premise of abiding by rules and regulations and maintaining integrity and honesty, we must boldly take action, embodying the courage to "tackle the most difficult tasks in order to achieve the farthest goals," and cultivating the wisdom to "reach broadly while attending meticulously to the smallest details." Only then can we surely write a brand-new chapter on the new journey of our era—a chapter that lives up to the times and the people.
